As of right now, the state of NJ does not require a permit for tents, tensioned membrane structures, or canopies that meet certain standards. You can read more about those regulations here. 

Every event is different, so every event's needs are different. While planning an event, you'll want to know how many people are attending, what sort of seating arrangements you'll want to have, if there will be a buffet, etc. Taking all of that into account, you can start to assess how much space you'll need and what size tent.
